On Earning Extra Credit

So, after posting this post, I caved and designed an extra-credit assignment for my students.

One of the campus groups was holding a multi-session event on intercultural interaction. Since we were covering this theme in class (intercultural interaction in the ancient period), I designed an assignment in which the students were to reflect on how ancient texts can help us to think about modern issues.

But.

A handful of my students weren't able to attend any of the multiple sessions (for legitimate reasons), but want (and need) to complete an extra-credit assignment.

Which means that I now have to design a second extra-credit assignment.

Sometimes, it just doesn't pay to do nice things for your students.
