Even if he decides to throw a going-away party for me (and my colleague who also found a job) the day after tomorrow without checking first checking if I (we) are available.

Don't get me wrong: I didn't have anything booked for Sunday afternoon. And I really appreciate that he's making this effort (not every advisor is as hospitable and gracious and as good a cook as mine!).

But if I had had something booked or I didn't want to go, I would have cleared out my schedule and gone anyways.

'Cause that's how the advisor-advisee relationship works.
